Tom Anderson established Cx Associates in 1994, before anyone was doing building commissioning in the Northeast. He saw an opportunity to engineer better buildings and went out on his own to forge a path towards lower energy HVAC system design and operations. Tom commissioned Vermont’s first LEED certified building, the ECHO Leahy Center for Lake Champlain in 2001; commissioned over 4 million square feet of new buildings; and provided design reviews for over 5 million square feet of space over the course of his career. Cx Associates, a firm dedicated to commissioning and energy efficiency, grew from Tom’s one-man shop to having nine employees and a reputation as a leading commissioning and energy efficiency program evaluation provider at the time of Tom’s departure from the firm in 2013.

ASHRAE Guideline 36: Advanced HVAC Control Sequences

January 27, 2017 — In the commercial industrial sector, retrofit energy efficiency measures such as the installation of LED lighting and variable frequency drives (VFDs) on HVAC equipment have become common. Matt Napolitan and Rick Stehmeyer will present an overview of ASHRAE Guideline 36 on February 2 at the Better Buildings by Design (BBD) conference. ASHRAE Guideline 36 is a set of HVAC control sequences that can be implemented as part of a retrofit or new construction, and the algorithms that building automation systems employ to keep commercial buildings comfortable and efficient.

As Commissioning becomes more commonplace, projects become more complicated, budgets become tighter and schedules become more aggressive, the question of scope and responsibilities becomes magnified, often with several parties having differing opinions. Often times the project contract(s) are not enough to settle these differences. This panel discussion will include positions on project deliverables from a general contractor, a commissioning provider and a controls contractor, often the three trades left standing at the end of any project.  Specifically, we will be exploring each stage of a construction project – from pre-design/design phase to the warranty period – and questioning who is responsible for setting the goals and objectives and setting the pace of the project, how to deal with insufficient design, who is responsible for supporting the commissioning work, setting the validation practices, and other typical project concerns.  It will be discussed that each role has a critical stake in the commissioning process, and that the overall success of that process hinges on the ability of everyone involved to perform their duties to the best possible extent.  New light will be shed on the neglected and rarely acknowledged roles that other parties play in the success of a commissioning provider.

We’re pleased to celebrate with UVMMC, our most recent client to receive LEED recognition. Cx Associates was retained to provide commissioning services for the Fletcher Allen Health Care (FAHC) General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) Relocation in Burlington, Vermont. This project was an existing building medical facility upgrade at Fletcher Allen Health Care, now the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC).

The project scored the maximum five points for enhanced commissioning, to verify and ensure that the tenant space was designed, constructed and calibrated to operate as intended. Commissioned systems included the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system, domestic hot water (DHW) system, lighting, lighting controls, electrical distribution, emergency power, security, and life safety.
